About SpaceTime Industries
SpaceTime Industries is developing a user interface that integrates existing surveillance systems with a containerized response station that will deploy autonomous assets for inspections by air, land, or sea. SpaceTime Industries provides a field-ready ruggedized infrastructure to monitor and respond to potential threats, be they weather, wildlife, or human. SpaceTime Industries brings together aerial drones, ground and sea robotics, camera sensor systems, and SATCOM/network communications into one coordinated product.
The role
We are seeking an experienced Mechatronics & Product Integration Engineer for an initial 3-month engagement. This person will work directly with our Head of Engineering and take the Response Station from product requirements into physical design, prototype build, demonstration, and testing.
The role is intended for a hands-on engineer who brings a wealth of knowledge and experience using off-the-shelf robotics and UAV/UGV/USV to bear, combined with demonstrated skills integrating communication and data collection systems. This candidate should enjoy working on energetic teams while also working toward aggressive timelines.
The best candidate will lead hardware selection, build and modify prototypes, and integrate all the mechanical, electrical, robotic, and software systems ready to pilot at customer sites.
Objectives
- Build and integrate prototype subsystems into a cohesive containerized solution ready for field testing and deploying pilot installations at customer sites.
- Translate the documented requirements into a practical physical system design.
- Develop the CAD models and refine the relevant requirements.
- Select and validate major mechanical, electrical, robotic, and compute hardware.
- Refine the BOM and establish power, thermal, weight, and space requirements, while simultaneously considering cost, manufacturability, and robustness.
Key responsibilities
- Own hands-on product integration across mechanical, electrical, sensor, communications, compute, and autonomous-vehicle systems.
- Design and manage all technical drawings and design files within a document control environment.
- Maintain clear engineering documentation, including CAD, BOMs, interface definitions, test procedures, design decisions, issues, and revision history.
- Select motors, actuators, sensors, cameras, controllers, batteries, networking hardware, and other components.
- Demonstrate ownership of the BOM and system-level power, thermal, mass, and packaging budgets.
- Integrate autonomous aerial, ground, and/or maritime platforms using appropriate hardware and communication interfaces, including vendor SDKs, APIs, serial/Ethernet/CAN links, and robotics protocols where applicable.
- Bench-test, assemble, troubleshoot, and modify prototype hardware.
- Work with the Sentinel software team to define and test hardware/software control interfaces.
- Coordinate with electrical, mechanical, RF, and fabrication specialists and other subject matter experts where deeper expertise is required.
What we are looking for
- 8+ years of hands-on mechatronics, robotics, electromechanical product development, or hardware integration experience.
- Fluent CAD capabilities using SolidWorks, Autodesk, PTC Creo, or similar tools.
- Demonstrated experience building, integrating, debugging, and testing physical prototypes.
- Working knowledge of motors, actuators, sensors, embedded controllers, wiring, power systems, and mechanical packaging.
- Experience integrating hardware and software across Ethernet, PoE, CAN, serial, USB, GPIO, or similar interfaces and communication protocols.
- Experience with robotics, autonomous systems, aerospace, defense, maritime, industrial automation, or ruggedized field systems is strongly preferred.
- Comfort working directly with fabricators, suppliers, software engineers, and specialist engineering resources.
- Able to move quickly from requirements to CAD, hardware selection, prototype build, and test.
- Experience with ROS/ROS2, MAVLink, PX4/ArduPilot, autonomous drones, edge compute, SATCOM/LTE communications, or remote sensor systems is a strong plus.
- Ability to read and collaborate on electrical schematics, wiring diagrams, manufacturing drawings, and mechanical drawings, even when specialist engineers own final sign-off.
- Able to work independently, make practical engineering decisions, surface risks early, and rapidly iterate to working hardware.
- A builder mindset: willing to spend significant time physically working on the prototype, not only directing others or producing architecture documentation.
- Enjoy working in an energetic environment.
Expected outcome of the engagement
By the end of the engagement, SpaceTime should have a defined physical system architecture, updated BOM and requirement documentation, completed design reviews, validated major hardware selections, integrated prototype subsystems, fabrication requirements, and a clear path to assembly and field testing.
